Crude oil, petroleum products and LPG bound for the nearby MRPL refinery head the cargo mix at New Mangalore, the principal deep-water port of India's Karnataka state on the Arabian Sea. The port also handles iron-ore pellets, coal, cement, fertiliser, edible oil and containers, reaching a record 50.04 million tonnes in FY2025-26 after 46.01 million in FY2024-25. Boxed traffic stood at roughly 180,000 TEU, worked at Berth 14 — 350 metres long with a 14-metre draft — and run by JSW Mangalore Container Terminal under a PPP concession whose capacity is set to grow from about 200,000 toward 350,000 TEU; July 2025 brought a monthly record of 21,425 TEU. Containers nonetheless remain secondary to liquid and dry bulk: in March 2026 the government approved a redevelopment of Berth 9 for liquid bulk, deepening it from 10.5 to 14 metres with structural provision for up to 19.8 metres. A dedicated international cruise terminal with passenger lounge, immigration and e-visa processing sits alongside the cargo business. As a breakwater-protected harbour it offers more weather-reliable berthing than open roadsteads nearby, with road and rail running inland toward Bengaluru and customs clearance handled through the port authority and associated inland container depots. For high-volume container moves in south India, Cochin and the deep-water terminal at Vizhinjam are alternative gateways.
