Around 30,000 tonnes of fish a year pass through Síldarvinnslan's plant at Neskaupstaður, one of Europe's most modern pelagic processing facilities and the anchor of the largest fishing port on Iceland's east coast. Set in the fjord of Norðfjörður, the harbour is built around landings of herring, blue whiting and mackerel for the company's fleet and more than 200 workers ashore. Its cargo quay of roughly 7.9 m has historically received fishing, general-cargo, tanker and passenger vessels, mainly for fuel and supply rather than liner trade. Container services do not call regularly, so east Iceland's international general and bulk cargo concentrates at the nearby deep-water port of Reyðarfjörður. For freight forwarders, Neskaupstaður matters chiefly for fish, fishmeal and fish oil, with containers and project cargo routed via Reyðarfjörður or Reykjavík.
