APM Terminals helps run the Petlim container facility in Nemrut Bay, the boxed-cargo anchor of one of Turkey's busiest industrial coastlines around Aliağa, north of İzmir. Owned within the Petkim/SOCAR group, Petlim offers a quay of roughly 700 m with a minimum depth near 16 metres, taking vessels of up to about 18,000 TEU; phase one opened in December 2016 with 800,000 TEU of capacity, and the site is designed for around 1.5 million TEU. Total investment reached some 400 million US dollars, including a 70-million-euro loan from the European Investment Bank. Together with the bay's other box terminals, the Aliağa port complex handled about 2.1 million TEU in 2024, up roughly 34 percent on 2023, lifting it into the Top 100 container ports for 2025 and relieving the congested city port of İzmir-Alsancak. The surrounding bay is lined with private industrial berths: the Petkim petrochemical complex, refineries, the Ege Gübre fertiliser terminal and a cluster of electric-arc steel mills. That mix makes scrap metal, petrochemicals, fertiliser and assorted dry and liquid bulk the dominant cargoes, with containers handled mainly at Petlim. Road and rail tie Aliağa into the western Anatolian hinterland, and for container bookings Petlim is the natural choice, with Alsancak or Mersin as alternatives depending on the trade lane.
