Roughly 8 million tonnes a year of coal-handling capacity define Navlakhi, an all-weather lighterage port on the south-western Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat. Operated by the Gujarat Maritime Board, it mainly imports steam coal — about 4.5 million tonnes in 2021 — alongside coke, fluorspar and pig iron, and ships out salt (around 2.5 million tonnes) and ceramics. Daily coal discharge runs at 8,000 to 9,000 tonnes, with navigation restricted to daylight along buoyed channels. The port does not handle containers on a scheduled basis; a box terminal is only at the planning stage, so containerised freight routes through Kandla (Deendayal) or Mundra instead. Inland, road links connect the quays to the Morbi ceramics cluster some 45 km away, while Kandla lies about 160 km off. For dry-bulk and salt shippers serving Saurashtra, Navlakhi is a practical regional outlet rather than a multipurpose gateway.
