Around 20 million tonnes of iron-ore products move across the quays of Narvik each year, making this ice-free fjord port one of northern Europe's most important bulk-loading terminals. The ore arrives by rail on the Ofoten Line from the Swedish mines at Kiruna and Malmberget, operated by LKAB Malmtrafik, which runs twelve underground silos and a newly installed ship loader at the quay. Deep water on the Ofotfjord lets Narvik handle Capesize and larger bulkers of up to roughly 250,000 DWT; about 300 vessels call each year, some 200 of them loaded with LKAB products, against a terminal capacity of around 30 million tonnes. For freight forwarders the port is essentially a dry-bulk gateway for iron ore and pellets, with only limited regional general-cargo and container handling. Inland links run via the Ofoten railway into Sweden and along the E6 and E10 highways. Containerised cargo for northern Norway is usually routed instead through Bodø or Mo i Rana, while some Swedish ore alternatively ships from Luleå on the Baltic.
