Founded as an 18th-century trading post where hunters bartered blubber and furs for European goods, Narsaq in southern Greenland has since shifted from sealing to fishing under Royal Greenland. Its natural deep-water harbour, served by Royal Arctic Line, handles more than 50,000 tonnes a year, mostly general cargo and containers on feeder rotations. An L-shaped commercial wharf takes vessels of about 150 m at a 9.5 m draught and offers bunkering. Because Greenland's towns have no connecting roads, all hinterland supply runs by coastal shipping, with containers reaching Europe via transhipment at Nuuk onward to Aalborg. For larger volumes or ocean services, Qaqortoq and the hub port of Nuuk are the nearest alternatives.
