At about 1.5 million tonnes a year of import capacity, Naoetsu's LNG terminal defines this port at Joetsu in Niigata Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan. Operated by INPEX since December 2013, the terminal receives imported LNG, regasifies it and blends it with domestic gas from the Minami-Nagaoka field, drawing on two 180,000-cubic-metre tanks. An oil terminal and berths for general and bulk cargo round out a facility that is essentially an energy and industrial port. The cargo pier reaches around 12.5 metres, deep enough for larger gas and tanker vessels. Broad containerised liner handling is not documented here; sea containers move through nearby Niigata. For overseas box services, forwarders pair Naoetsu with Niigata or the ports of Tokyo Bay.
