Upstream city quays and a deep-water estuary terminal make up two faces of the same gateway at Nantes, the inland half of the Nantes–Saint-Nazaire port on France's Loire. Ocean-going container and ro-ro traffic is handled downstream at Montoir-de-Bretagne, where operator TGO works a reinforced quay receiving vessels of up to around 8,000 TEU. Box volumes have slipped to roughly 120,000 TEU in 2025 (down about 11 percent), after CMA CGM dropped its Montoir call on the West Indies service in June 2025 and MSC — partly through its tie-up with WEC Lines — gained share. Beyond containers, the complex moves ro-ro units, dry bulk, agribulk and energy cargo via an adjacent LNG terminal, with total port throughput near 25.7 million tonnes in 2024. To replace lost direct calls, CMA CGM has been developing a feeder link transshipping via Tanger Med, alongside work on a multimodal rail offer at Montoir. The Loire quays at Nantes itself now suit lighter general cargo, given the limited channel depth upriver. Motorways and rail extend the hinterland across western France toward the Paris basin, and forwarders booking containers route through Montoir, with Le Havre and Bordeaux the nearest alternatives.
