Run by the Canadian Forces as the Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges (CFMETR), Nanoose Bay on the east coast of Vancouver Island is a naval facility rather than a commercial port. Across a seabed area of about 100 square kilometres, the range tests 300 to 400 torpedoes a year along with sonar and sonobuoy systems, supported by vessels such as CFAV Sikanni. There is no container, breakbulk or customs activity here, so its commercial freight relevance is very limited. Commercial shipments are handled at Nanaimo, about 30 kilometres south, or the Port of Vancouver.
