Pier facilities of around 7.9 metres depth and a navigable river channel define Nanchital's role as an industrial and tanker berth on the Coatzacoalcos River, not a multipurpose box terminal. The very small river port sits on the eastern bank within the Coatzacoalcos metropolitan area and is tightly integrated with Pemex's petrochemical operations. Cargo here is dominated by petrochemical feedstock, oil products and bulk liquids rather than containers. A new ethane import terminal in the Coatzacoalcos–Nanchital area supplies cryogenic raw material to the surrounding petrochemical plants, among the largest concentrations of their kind worldwide. Regular container handling is not confirmed for Nanchital itself. Containerised and general cargo move through the neighbouring port of Coatzacoalcos (MX COA) or Veracruz.
