Indonesia's national carrier Pelni, together with ASDP ferries, gives the small port of Namlea its main link to the outside world, connecting Buru Island with Ambon and Ternate. As the principal port and administrative seat of Buru in Maluku province, Namlea handles the island's everyday trade rather than international liner traffic. Outbound cargo is dominated by agricultural produce, seafood and local raw materials, while inbound shipments cover machinery, foodstuffs and consumer goods. With a channel depth of only about 1.8 metres and no confirmed container service, it functions as an island breakbulk and ferry port. Containerised freight is better routed through Ambon (Yos Sudarso) or Makassar.
