At roughly 450,000 tonnes of underground storage, Namikata holds one of the world's largest LPG caverns — a clear sign that this is an energy terminal rather than a freight port. Located in Ehime Prefecture, the Namikata Terminal handles about 1 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas and oil products each year, shipped in from Japan and abroad. The site, classified as an open roadstead, is built around several large low-temperature LPG tanks of around 45,000 tonnes each and berths sized for large gas carriers. It does not handle containers, breakbulk or conventional liner cargo; its purpose is national energy stockpiling. By 2030 the existing tanks are planned for conversion to ammonia, with a targeted throughput near 1 million tonnes per year. Forwarders with container or general-cargo shipments should look to Matsuyama, Imabari, or the ports of Kobe and Osaka.
