Once a busy company sawmill town, Nahma shipped lumber by vessel and barge from Big Bay de Noc to Chicago and New York between 1881 and 1951; today it retains essentially no commercial port function. The channel is only about 3.4 metres deep, and no container, bulk or customs cargo moves through the site. For commercial lake freight in the region, shippers rely on Escanaba, with its ore and bulk docks on Little Bay de Noc, and on Green Bay.
