Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, not container lines, defines Nagasaki: its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works builds high-value vessels such as LNG carriers and cruise ships and operates a 300,000-tonne dry dock. One of the first Japanese harbours opened to foreign trade, the port today rests on heavy industry, fishing, and the export of industrial goods including wind and thermal power equipment. Jetfoils and ferries run by Kyushu Shosen connect the port with the offshore Goto Islands. For international containerised cargo, however, Nagasaki matters little: Kyushu's commercial box traffic concentrates on Hakata (Fukuoka) and Kitakyushu/Moji. In early 2025 Mitsubishi folded its merchant-shipbuilding work into a joint venture with Imabari Shipbuilding, sharpening Nagasaki's focus on specialised and naval vessels. Shippers moving containers to or from Kyushu therefore normally route through those two ports rather than Nagasaki, whose strengths lie in shipbuilding, repair and regional passenger links rather than liner freight.
