The port is better known today for its fair-weather international passenger ferry to Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka — about 60 nautical miles in three to four hours. For containerised or larger consignments, the nearby deep-water Karaikal Port is the practical option, backed by Chennai and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin).
