Serving northern Mozambique together with the landlocked markets of Malawi and Zambia, Nacala is the natural deep-water gateway of the Nacala Corridor. The harbour ranks among the deepest in Southern Africa; a JICA-funded upgrade of USD 273.6 million, completed in 2023, deepened it to a 14-metre draft and enlarged its container yards. Its container and multipurpose terminal handles roughly 100,000 TEU a year across two berths totalling 375 metres at 15 metres depth alongside. Across the bay, the Nacala-a-Velha coal terminal exports up to 6.5 million tonnes annually from Vale's Moatize coalfield. Inland connectivity rests on the 912-kilometre Nacala railway to Moatize, routed through Malawi and rated for about 18 million tonnes, complemented by the N12 highway toward Lilongwe. For container, reefer and breakbulk cargo bound for inland southeastern Africa, Nacala is a credible alternative to Beira and Dar es Salaam.
