Few Ukrainian ports illustrate the war's impact on freight as sharply as Mykolaiv, a river port on the Southern Bug near its outflow into the Black Sea. Before 2022 it ranked among the country's leading agricultural gateways, handling grain, sunflower oil, ores and alumina for the local refinery, with the wider Odesa–Mykolaiv region offering around 71 million tons of annual capacity. Since the Russian invasion, however, commercial navigation has been largely suspended, and a full, reliable reopening is not confirmed. Hinterland links by rail and road reach central Ukraine, while access from the sea follows the dredged Bug–Dnipro–Liman canal. Forwarders should verify the current operating status before booking. Working alternatives at present include Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi near Odesa, Izmail on the Danube and Constanța in Romania.
