Despite carrying its own UN/LOCODE (JP MTR), Mutsurejima is not a freight harbour in its own right but an island oil terminal serving the Port of Shimonoseki, just to its east at the approaches to the Korea Strait. Rather than a cargo quay, it offers a deep anchorage of more than 23 m where tankers lie, with conventional handling taking place at Shimonoseki itself. The island has no road or rail hinterland of its own. There is no container, break-bulk or customs capability here. Shippers should route such cargo through Shimonoseki or the neighbouring Kanmon ports of Kitakyushu and Moji.
