With roughly 8 metres of draft, 762 metres of dock frontage, 20 acres of laydown space and some 18,500 m² of indoor storage, the Mart Dock anchors cargo handling at Muskegon on Michigan's western shore. Operated by Port City Marine Services for the West Michigan Dock and Market Corporation, the port moves more than one million tons of dry bulk a year — chiefly aggregates, coal, salt and cement — and handles no container traffic. The harbour sits on Muskegon Lake, linked to Lake Michigan by a short navigation channel. Inland distribution runs via US-31 and rail into western Michigan. Like every Great Lakes port, operations pause during the winter ice season. Shippers needing containers or international break-bulk should look to Burns Harbor (Indiana), Milwaukee or Chicago.
