Steel, coal, iron ore and refined petroleum define the cargo crossing the wharves of Muroran on Japan's Hokkaido island, far more than containers do. Set on Uchiura (Volcano) Bay, the port is split by the Hakucho Bridge into inner basins and an outer harbour able to take vessels up to roughly 280,000 tonnes. Dedicated ore berths handle ships of 100,000–150,000 tonnes, while a tanker quay of about 11 metres depth serves units up to 50,000 DWT for the local refinery. Dry bulk, liquid bulk and industrial breakbulk dominate over boxed freight, reflecting the steelmaking, shipbuilding and oil-refining base ashore. In early December 2025 a fire on a hot-blast stove halted the blast furnace at Nippon Steel's North Japan Works, with the company expecting several months before ironmaking resumes. Full-container services are limited; FCL cargo for the region typically routes through Tomakomai further east on the Pacific coast. Road and rail link the quays to the Sapporo metropolitan hinterland, with Tomakomai or Hakodate the practical container alternatives.
