State-owned tin producer PT Timah gives the port of Muntok much of its commercial purpose. Known formally as Tanjung Kalian, the harbour is both the main cargo port of West Bangka and a busy ferry terminal on Indonesia's Bangka Island. Tin smelted at the local works leaves here for export, alongside the world-famous Muntok white pepper grown across the island. Passenger and ro-ro ferries also cross the Bangka Strait several times a day to Tanjung Api-Api near Palembang in South Sumatra, a run of about three hours. With a depth of only some 4 to 5 m, Tanjung Kalian is a shallow port built for smaller vessels and ferries rather than large container carriers. For containerised freight and larger breakbulk volumes, shippers tend to use Pangkalbalam near Pangkalpinang or the Sumatran ports of Palembang and Panjang.
