Cement, limestone, dolomite and iron ore make up most of the tonnage crossing the quays at Mukho today. Opened in 1941 on what is now the Donghae waterfront, the port began life as South Korea's leading hard-coal harbour on the east coast and shifted to other dry bulk as the coal trade declined. Stevedores load these minerals from the Yeongdong mining region across several berths, including a privately built limestone pier. A daily passenger ferry also links the Mukho terminal with Ulleungdo Island, giving the port a mixed bulk-and-ferry character. Containers and liner breakbulk play almost no part here: boxes move through Busan, while heavier bulk can also use the larger, adjacent Donghae Port. With roughly 7.9 m alongside, Mukho suits coasters and smaller bulk carriers rather than deep-draught ocean vessels.
