Around 330,000 TEU a year pass through Muara, Brunei's largest and principal seaport at the north-eastern entrance to Brunei Bay, about 28 km from Bandar Seri Begawan. Run by the Muara Port Company, the roughly 24-hectare site combines a 250 m container terminal, a conventional terminal with six berths and ferry terminals. It handles containers, general cargo, bulk and project cargo, served by two Panamax quay cranes, reach stackers and reefer points, with a container yard, transit warehouses and an inland container depot. Brunei's hinterland is reached by road, with no rail link. Within the BIMP-EAGA growth area, Muara is a regional node for Sabah, Sarawak and the southern South China Sea. Deep-sea container connections usually run via transshipment at Singapore, while Bintulu and Kota Kinabalu are regional alternatives.
