Despite the word "port," Moss Landing handles no containers, break-bulk or RoRo: it is California's leading commercial fishing harbour, by some measures the state's largest by landed catch. More than 600 berths host around 350 fishing vessels landing Dungeness crab, halibut, king salmon, albacore, anchovies, sardines and squid for local Monterey Bay processors. Channel depths of roughly 3–4 m rule out deep-sea cargo ships entirely. The harbour also anchors marine research, with institutes such as MBARI based alongside the fishing fleet. Forwarders moving boxes or general cargo in the region use Oakland or Stockton, while chilled seafood leaves Moss Landing by truck via Highway 1 and the US-101 corridor. For logistics purposes this is a specialised fishing and research harbour, not a commercial freight gateway.
