Phosphate, sulfur, fertilizer and wood chips on the bulk side; lumber, paper, steel and natural rubber on the breakbulk side; plus roll-on/roll-off traffic — Morehead City is a true general-cargo port on the North Carolina coast. One of North Carolina Ports' two deep-water terminals, it lies about four miles from the Atlantic and offers a 45-foot channel, among the deepest on the US East Coast. Nine berths along some 5,366 feet of wharf are served by a Liebherr portal gantry crane rated at 124 tonnes. More than one million square feet of covered storage and 43 acres of paved yard support break-bulk and bulk handling. On-dock rail via Norfolk Southern and direct interstate access link the port to inland markets. Containerised liner cargo, by contrast, moves through North Carolina's other port at Wilmington.
