Founded as a fur-trading post in the 17th century, Montreal (CA MTR) grew into Canada's historic gateway to the Atlantic and remains the easternmost deep-water container port that ocean vessels can reach without transhipment. The port handled about 1.46 million TEU in 2024, down 4.8 percent year on year, across four terminals run by Montreal Gateway Terminals (Cast, Racine) and Termont (Maisonneuve, Viau). Sitting some 1,600 kilometres inland on the St. Lawrence River, it specialises in transatlantic trade with Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, served by CMA CGM, MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and OOCL. Beyond containers, it moves grain, dry bulk, liquid bulk and breakbulk. Its decisive edge is rail: CN and CPKC operate directly on the docks and carry roughly two-thirds of containers inland to Ontario and the US Midwest, including Chicago. A channel kept ice-free year-round makes the port dependable through the Canadian winter. The new Contrecœur terminal, to be operated by DP World, broke ground in April 2026 and is set to add about 1.15 million TEU of capacity from 2030. For larger East Coast volumes, shippers turn to Halifax or New York/New Jersey.
