Fishing has been Montauk's chief industry since colonial times, and the harbour on the eastern tip of Long Island remains New York State's largest commercial fishing port. Trawlers land fluke, tilefish, tuna, lobster and squid at long-established docks such as Gosman's and Salivar's, with most of the catch consigned to New York's Fulton Fish Market. Sheltered Lake Montauk gives the fleet a safe natural harbour, though its cargo piers are shallow at roughly 1.8 metres. The port handles no container, breakbulk or bulk freight; catch moves inland by refrigerated truck rather than by ship. Forwarders with containerised or customs-cleared ocean cargo should plan instead on the New York/New Jersey terminals about 120 miles to the west.
