About 2.5 million tons of cargo crossed Monroe's wharves in 2022, making this the only Michigan port on Lake Erie and a workhorse of the lower Great Lakes. Coal and limestone bound for the adjacent DTE power plant drive most of that volume, with synthetic gypsum and bottom ash shipped back out as byproducts. Terminal operator DRM Terminal Services also handles steel and project cargo such as wind-energy components across the River Raisin berths. On-dock rail and direct interstate access link the port to Detroit, 35 miles north, and the wider Michigan manufacturing base. The roughly 16-foot channel suits Seaway-class lakers rather than ocean-going container ships, so deep-sea boxes and customs clearance are better routed through Detroit or Cleveland. A state-funded container terminal is in planning, which could broaden the cargo mix in future.
