Up to 9.44 million barrels of crude can sit in Mongstad's underground rock caverns — a scale that makes this Equinor-run site Norway's largest port by tonnage. Located on the west coast near Bergen, Mongstad (NO MON) is first and foremost an energy terminal rather than a general-cargo harbour. Roughly 40% of the oil Equinor produces on the Norwegian shelf is stored here before export to North America, Europe and Asia. The adjacent refinery processes about 12 million tonnes of crude a year (around 230,000 barrels per day), yielding gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG and naphtha, and is now the country's only operating refinery. A natural-gas-liquids plant (Vestprosess) and a CO₂-capture technology centre complete the complex. Mongstad handles no containers or breakbulk; shippers with such cargo should look to Bergen or Oslo.
