Around 2.11 million TEU and a record 45.45 million tonnes of total cargo in 2025 make Mombasa (KE MBA) the largest container port in East Africa and Kenya's only international seaport. Its natural Kilindini Harbour serves a vast hinterland along the Northern Corridor — Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DR Congo, South Sudan, northern Tanzania, Somalia and Ethiopia. The state-owned Kenya Ports Authority runs the port, where Maersk alone accounts for roughly 30% of container throughput. In May 2026 CMA CGM committed about USD 800 million to upgrade the container terminals at berths 20–22 and 23–24; quay and yard works, new terminal systems and gate automation are expected to add some 1.4 million TEU of capacity. Beyond containers, the port handles petroleum, vehicles, dry bulk and general cargo, with tea, coffee and fresh produce among the leading exports and reefer traffic growing. The Standard Gauge Railway links the quays over 472 kilometres to inland container depots at Nairobi and Naivasha, where clearance increasingly takes place before cargo moves on to Uganda and neighbouring states; in February 2026 Maersk and KPA agreed to route more fresh-produce exports through Naivasha. Importers can therefore clear customs either at the quay or inland, which can cut storage and demurrage costs.
