Dry and liquid bulk, containers, steel, forest products and vehicles make up the working cargo of Mokpo, at the south-western tip of South Korea on the Yellow Sea. The port doubles as a ferry gateway to the offshore islands of Dadohae and to China and Japan, carrying passengers alongside freight. Its Samhak Wharf offers four berths for grain, coal and general cargo, taking ships of around 30,000 tonnes, while North Port serves shipbuilding and Taebul Port supports inland industrial estates. Shipbuilding and repair, anchored by the nearby Daebul complex, remain a mainstay of the local economy. As a regional multipurpose port, Mokpo mainly serves South Jeolla Province. For large international box volumes, Gwangyang and Busan are the obvious alternatives.
