Two container terminals at Tachinoura and Hibiki, roll-on/roll-off berths for vehicles, a tank terminal for chemicals and dangerous goods and a busy ferry quay make up the facilities of Moji Ko, at the northern tip of Kyushu on the Kanmon Strait. Part of the wider Port of Kitakyushu, it functions as the island's northern maritime entrance, directly opposite Honshu. The Kitakyushu complex handles more than 50 million tonnes a year across containers, dry bulk, petroleum and general cargo. Motorways and rail tie the port into the industrial belt of northern Kyushu. Frequent ferries also link Moji with Shimonoseki across the narrow strait. For large deep-sea container volumes, nearby Hakata in Fukuoka offers greater capacity.
