Bauxite built Moengo: from 1922 the Aluminum Company of America shipped the ore down the Cottica River, and for years this was one of Suriname's busiest loading points. When Suralco moved mining to the Coermotibo in the late 1990s the dock fell idle; sold in 1994, it was rehabilitated by Traymore N.V. from 2004 and reopened as a private port in 2008. With only about 5 m of channel and pier depth, the river site now suits smaller vessels and regional project or supply traffic rather than confirmed container or liner services. Containerised cargo, customs clearance and breakbulk for Suriname run through the main port of Nieuwe Haven in Paramaribo, while bauxite and alumina historically moved via Paranam. For shippers, Moengo is a specialised river and regional port with limited wider freight relevance.
