Backed by a fairway of around 15.5 metres and a cargo pier near 11 metres, Miyako can take mid-sized vessels but is not a container-line port. Open since 1615 on the Sanriku coast of Iwate Prefecture, it pairs a long-standing fishing tradition with cargo work for the regional timber and chemical industries. Timber and sawn-wood imports for local lumber processing are the mainstay of its commercial throughput. Bunker fuel is available, while repair capacity is limited. Hinterland access runs through the Sanriku road network, and containerised shipments are typically routed instead via Hachinohe or Sendai-Shiogama. For bulk or project cargo, however, Miyako remains a workable regional call.
