Small in scale yet well equipped, Misumi Ko sits at the tip of the Uto Peninsula on the western coast of Kyushu, in Kumamoto Prefecture. Sheltered by surrounding islands that act as natural breakwaters, the harbour offers anchorage depths exceeding 30 m and four berths for vessels up to 10,000 DWT, plus 3,000-DWT berths, cranes of 10 to 50 tonnes and around 28,900 m² of warehousing. It handles general and project cargo and also acts as a ferry gateway to the Amakusa Islands. The historic West Port was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as part of Japan's Meiji industrial heritage sites. For container and deep-sea traffic, shippers turn to the ports of Kumamoto or Yatsushiro, which serve the prefecture's commercial hinterland.
