Around 1,600 vessels, 6.2 million tonnes of cargo and some 25,000 TEU pass through Miri each year, the largest crude-oil export port in Malaysia. Set at the mouth of the Miri River in north-east Sarawak, it works petroleum and LNG through offshore tanker facilities at Lutong, where three berths moor Panamax tankers in 12.4–13.4 m of water. Separate timber, passenger and general-cargo terminals handle iron and steel, machinery, tractors, foodstuffs and sawn timber. A 200 m Crew Change Terminal, started in 2019, serves personnel rotations for the offshore oil and gas platforms. The shallow approach channel, which can drop to about one metre at low tide, limits larger container vessels. Shippers needing deep-draught or full container services typically route via Bintulu, with Kuching/Senari taking additional general cargo.
