Home to Mexico's first oil refinery, Minatitlan (MX MTT) grew up around petroleum on the Río Coatzacoalcos, about 32 kilometres inland from the Gulf of Mexico in south-eastern Veracruz. The Pemex-run refinery still shapes traffic, so crude-derived and petrochemical products dominate cargo here. With a river channel of only about 7.9 metres, deep-sea and tanker tonnage mostly calls at nearby Coatzacoalcos and the Pajaritos oil terminal, linked by pipeline and river. Container and conventional general-cargo activity at Minatitlan itself is minimal. Hinterland connections run by road, rail and the pipeline network across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
