Among the oldest ports of the Mediterranean, Mina Tarabulus serves Tripoli, the Libyan capital, and ranks as the country's busiest port by vessel movement. Two breakwaters of 2,000 and 700 metres shelter a basin of around 500 hectares that takes ships up to 190 metres long and about 11.5 metres draft, with an annual capacity near 4.5 million tonnes. Its 27 berths include 18 for general goods, five for roll-on/roll-off traffic and three for port services. Cargo passing through ranges from containers and dry bulk to chemicals, oils and even live animals, alongside a passenger operation. Reefer plugs are available for roughly 250 forty-foot refrigerated units. The Libyan Ports Company operates the facility. In May 2025, violent clashes in Tripoli briefly suspended port operations, a reminder of the location's continuing political risk. Otherwise the port is generally uncongested, with waiting times between arrival and berthing usually a few hours to at most a day, and humanitarian cargo given priority. For larger container volumes or more predictable scheduling, Misurata and Al Khums are worth weighing as complements.
