APM Terminals Bahrain, not the historic quays of Mina Salman, now handles the kingdom's boxes: container traffic moved from BH MIN to Khalifa Bin Salman Port at Hidd from 2009, about five kilometres away across a causeway. Across roughly 80 hectares Mina Salman still handles general and breakbulk cargo, but a large share of the site is naval, hosting the United States Navy's Naval Support Activity for the Fifth Fleet and the United Kingdom's HMS Jufair facility, opened in 2018. Khalifa Bin Salman Port offers nine main berths and about 3,500 metres of quay, with Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and COSCO calling regularly. Throughput runs at roughly 300,000 to 370,000 TEU a year against a design capacity near 1.1 million TEU, and an agreement between Bahrain and APM Terminals aims to more than double volumes by 2030 while deepening trade with Saudi Arabia. The King Fahd Causeway links the island to Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province by road, which makes Bahrain useful for Gulf distribution. Heavy ship repair is available at the nearby ASRY yard with its large dry dock. Shippers needing container services, modern terminals or extensive yard space should therefore plan around Hidd rather than Mina Salman.
