Salalah's biggest commercial asset is geography: lying on the open Arabian Sea outside the Strait of Hormuz, the port (formerly Mina Raysut) offers carriers a deep-sea call that avoids the Gulf chokepoint altogether. That position underpins a transshipment business in which roughly 90% of boxes are relayed between mainline Asia–Europe–East Africa services and regional feeders. Inland distribution across the Dhofar region runs by road, with no rail link in place as yet. Shippers needing alternative Gulf-region gateways most often turn to Jebel Ali or Sohar.
