Once Oman's principal container gateway, Port Sultan Qaboos (Mina Qabus) in Muscat stopped handling commercial box traffic in 2014, when container, general and RoRo cargo were transferred to Sohar. The terminal now operates chiefly as a cruise port, with the only remaining cargoes being edible oil, grain and wheat, and bitumen. For containerised import and export shipments it is therefore no longer a viable option. The limited bulk and liquid volumes that remain are distributed by road into the Muscat area, as there is no rail connection. Forwarders route container traffic through Sohar, while Salalah serves transhipment flows. Routine container customs clearance accordingly takes place at Sohar.
