Around 15 percent of global manganese demand is served by ore that crosses the wharf at Milner Bay, the export point for the Groote Eylandt mine in Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria. Owned by GEMCO — a venture of South32 (60 percent) and Anglo American (40 percent) — the port sits roughly 16 kilometres from an open-cut operation running since 1966. Inland movement relies on the dedicated mine-to-quay haul road, as the island has no rail or inland-waterway link to the mainland. After Tropical Cyclone Megan damaged the facility in March 2024, the rebuilt wharf resumed shipments in May 2025.
