Sailing dinghies, moored yachts and the curved Victorian esplanade define the small harbour of Millport on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde. Once a regular call for Clyde steamers and 'puffer' cargo boats that landed goods and lifted the island's potatoes, the harbour today is a leisure and anchorage spot with only about 1.8 m alongside and no commercial freight role — the car ferry itself runs from Cumbrae Slip to Largs, not from the town. A £4.5 million marina development under the Ayrshire Growth Deal — up to 50 berths, targeted opening in 2028 — will expand leisure capacity, not freight. Forwarders with containers, breakbulk or bulk use the Clydeport facilities at Greenock and Glasgow, or the deep-water bulk terminal at Hunterston on the adjacent mainland.
