Sailing dinghies, moored yachts and the curved Victorian esplanade define the small harbour of Millport on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde. Once a regular call for Clyde steamers and 'puffer' cargo boats that landed goods and lifted the island's potatoes, the harbour today is a leisure and anchorage spot with only about 1.8 m alongside and no commercial freight role — the car ferry itself runs from Cumbrae Slip to Largs, not from the town. Forwarders with containers, breakbulk or bulk use the Clydeport facilities at Greenock and Glasgow, or the deep-water bulk terminal at Hunterston on the adjacent mainland.
