Incorporated in 1848, Milbridge grew as a shipbuilding and fishing town at the mouth of the Narraguagus River, taking in lumber sawn upstream at Cherryfield and later running sardine canneries. Today it remains an active fishing and lobster harbour worked by more than 100 licensed fishermen, with seafood processing alongside. The region's well-known wild blueberries (Jasper Wyman & Son is headquartered here) leave by road rather than by sea. There is no commercial container or general-cargo handling, and the tidal channel is shallow at about 1.8 m. Conventional sea freight in this part of Maine routes through Eastport or Searsport.
