Mikindani is no longer a commercial cargo port but a historic 19th-century trading town whose dhows once carried ivory, copal and slaves across the Indian Ocean. After the First World War the British colonial administration shifted the district seat to neighbouring Mtwara, whose deeper harbour could take larger ocean-going ships, sealing Mikindani's economic decline. Today its bay is a marine reserve and the waterfront serves mainly artisanal fishing by dhow and dugout, with a cargo-pier depth of only about 1.8 m. Container, breakbulk and customs traffic for southern Tanzania is handled at the deep-water port of Mtwara.
