A tidal lock modelled on the Panama Canal sets Miike Ko apart from any other Japanese port, holding water levels steady against the wide tidal range of the Ariake Sea so that vessels stay afloat alongside the quay. Built in 1908 to ship coal from the adjacent Miike mine, the basin was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015 as part of Japan's Meiji industrial heritage.
