Tall grain elevators still mark the harbour at Midland, set on Midland Bay off Georgian Bay on Lake Huron in Ontario. The town grew as a significant grain and lumber transfer point in Great Lakes shipping, though that trade fell away sharply in the late twentieth century. Today the harbour mainly serves as a winter berth for grain carriers and offers supplementary capacity for grain and lumber, while the town dock hosts recreational craft. As a Canadian customs port, clearance is in principle available, but there is no scheduled liner service. For ongoing bulk or project cargo in southern Georgian Bay, Owen Sound, Goderich and Sarnia are the practical alternatives.
