Capable of handling Suezmax tankers of up to about 160,000 DWT at its offshore terminal some 8.6 km out to sea, Midia is one of the largest oil terminals on the Black Sea and functions essentially as an energy and petrochemical port. Lying roughly 13 km north of Constanța, it serves Petromidia, Romania's largest refinery, operated by the Rompetrol group (KazMunayGas), feeding crude either across in-port berths that take tankers up to around 24,000 DWT or through a 40 km pipeline from Constanța. Within the harbour, berths 1–4 handle crude oil and molasses while berths 9A/B/C cover refined products, ethylene and LPG. There is no container liner service here; box traffic moves through neighbouring Constanța, the Black Sea's largest container port. Hinterland access runs via road, rail and the Danube–Black Sea canal system linking the Constanța cluster to Central Europe. Part of the basin is additionally being upgraded into a fishery harbour with EU funding.
