With 63 registered fishing vessels worked by roughly 69 fishermen, Mevagissey ranks as Cornwall's second-largest fishing port rather than a commercial cargo harbour. The present inner basin dates from a 1774 Act of Parliament, with the outer pier added in 1888, and the site is run by the Mevagissey Harbour Trustees as one of only three Trust Ports left in England.
