Few ports anchor a region's trade as firmly as Mersin does for southern Turkey and its land-locked neighbours. Run since 2007 by a consortium of PSA International, IFM Investors and Turkey's Akfen Holding, Mersin International Port (MIP) is the country's leading container terminal, handling around 2 million TEU and more than 8 million tonnes of conventional cargo in 2023. Beyond containers, it manages dry bulk, liquid bulk and project cargo, giving it a genuine multipurpose profile. The first phase of the roughly US$455 million EMH2 expansion was inaugurated in June 2025, and the terminal welcomed its first 400-metre container vessel in October 2025. The new quay runs to 880 metres with a 17.5-metre draft, letting two ultra-large container vessels berth at once while capacity rises from 2.6 to 3.6 million TEU. Road and rail corridors carry cargo deep into central Anatolia and onward as transit traffic to Iraq and Central Asia. An adjoining free zone supports processing, storage and re-export. For forwarders, Mersin is the practical gateway for southern and eastern Turkey and the neighbouring transit markets. Iskenderun (LimakPort) offers a regional alternative, while Asyaport near Tekirdag serves transhipment needs.
